Surigao Earthquake 6.5 in Magnitude Hits Tandag City

Surigao del Sur have been hit by a 6.5 earthquake at dawn on Saturday, November 3, 2012, according to the latest bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs).

The City of Tanday in Surigao del Sur was the epicenter of the 6.5 magnitude earthquake. According to Philvolcs Surigao through Antonio Madrio he stated that the tremor was located 22 kilometers northeast of Tandag City. The earthquake struck at around 2:17 A.M.

Philvolcs recorded some intensity at:

  • – Intensity V: Tandag City
  • – Intensity IV: Surigao City
  • – Intensity III: Bislig

The quake had a depth of 78 kilometers, which was according to Philvolcs Director Renato Solidum was tectonic in origin, meaning it was caused by the movement of a local fault line.

Aftershocks were also felt at around 6:13 A.M. with at least three aftershocks. Although there were separate aftershocks after the incident, Philvolcs confirmed that a tsunami is not expected to follow the earthquake.

Meanwhile after the earthquake in Surigao, Bacolod and Bago City in Negros Occidental was also hit by a lower magnitude earthquake at around 4:39 A.M. on November 3, 2012.
