Daniel Radcliffe opens new flick ‘The Woman in Black’, but he doesn’t believe in ghosts

The English actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular character of ‘Harry Potter’ on its film series will be off to the big screen for another mysterious flick- “The Woman in Black!”

“The Woman in Black” is a 1983 thriller fiction novel which was written by Susan Hill,  a spooky tail about a menacing female spectre who is seen before a child dies that haunts a small English town. The ghost of a scorned woman who was unable to save Nathaniel, her beloved son, from drowning. She now takes on a horrifying form. Set on vengeance, her veil hides gaping sockets eaten away by scavengers and her curse hides an even darker secret – and whenever she is seen, a child dies.

This was first adapted into a stage play by Stephen Mallatratt, and then a  TV movie based on the story was produced in 1989.

In the said flick, Daniel Radcliffe plays the role of a young lawyer Arthur Kipps, who  leaves his son in London to settle the legal affairs of the recently deceased Alice Drablow. He then discovers that a series of inexplicable accidents and suicides have forced the parents of her village to barricade their children indoors, as if protecting them from an unseen foe.

Although Radcliffe will be something like ‘ghost-hunter,’ he said that he doesn’t believe in ghosts. In an interview he had with Bang Showbiz, he admitted that he was  occasionally frightened on set, but “he’s not a believer in ghosts, so he find it very unlikely he’ll ever see one.”

“Other than being occasionally scared by Liz White (plays the woman in black), who would just sort of sit around in the Woman in Black outfit – I’d just sort of catch a glimpse of her sort of half made up, that was kind of a bit frightening – it was quite a relaxed shoot, actually,” Radcliffe added.

Radcliffe also talks about how difficult it was honing his acting skills while literally growing up on screen (he started in the “Harry Potter” series at the age of 11).

“Sometimes I really feel like I’m getting the hang of it, because I never really had a process. My process was mainly that I hit my marks and I said my lines. So I’m kind of trying to find a process that allows me to find a sure fire way into a character, if it doesn’t come easily,” says Radcliffe.

Ready to be scared? Well, “The Woman in Black” opens on February 3 nationwide!
