Azkals formation and possible line-up against Kuwait Leg 2

The Philippine Azkals will change their strategy for the 2nd leg of their match against Kuwait that will be held later today at around 7:00 PM (PST). Coach Weiss will be using an offensive formation of 4-4-2 an attacking option against the Kuwaitis. He will be using 2 striker for the match. Phil and Angel Guirado will spearhead the attack as the two (–foul word(s) removed–)igned strikers while James and Chieffy will provide room for them and will play the left and right flanks.

During their first match against Kuwait the Philippine Azkals had opt for the rarely used 4-5-1 defensive formation instead of the traditional 4-4-2 . This kind of formation had only one striker and put an extra defender in the midfield. The formation had packed the midfield which gave the Kuwaitis hard time in executing their p(–foul word(s) removed–)ing game but gave the Kuwaiti’s an advantage in counter-attacking.

The Azkals have learned a lot of lessons during their first encounter against the Kuwaitis held in Kuwait last July 23 and they will used their experience to pull back and tried to score for a possible upset against one of Asia’s stronger team. The Kuwaiti’s have respected the way the Filipinos have played during their first encounter. Although more talented and skillful, the Kuwaiti’s have already anticipated that the fans will come out and support the Azkals.

The 4-4-2 formation that will be used by Azkals will certainly challenged the defenders from the Kuwaiti’s side although they can now play long p(–foul word(s) removed–)ing ball in the midfield but it will surely be an advantage for the Azkals if executed well. The primary concern now for the Azkals, is that they must control the tempo of the game. The formation will do a miracles for team Azkals if executed well.

Another factors that will be favorable for the Azkals was the return of their central mid field defender Stephan Schrock. The 4-4-2 formation have been proven already during their match against Sri Lanka wherein they scored a total of 4 goals. However the formation have not been tested against a more stronger team.

The offensive formation of 4-4-2 will have disadvantages as well especially when the midfield will be overwhelmed but it is still a balance formation and will provide more flexibility. The formation can be easily switch to defensive mode having a 4-2-4 or even a 2-4-4, it depends upon the movements of the opposing team.

Philippine Azkals possible line-up for the upcoming game today at the Rizal Memorial Stadium will be submitted later by the PFF and Coach Weiss to the FIFA organizing committees.
