In the midst of a great turmoil in Libya, the UN Security Council authorized air strike Thursday, to halt Moammar Gadhafi’s offensive embattled rebel forces in Libya. The first bombing attack will be taking place within few hours.
The UN council voted 10-0 out of 15-member council wherein five abstention from permanent members such as China, Russia and Germany. The vote permitted the council all necessary measure to impose a no-fly-zone and impose ceasefire on Gadhafi’s military forces and in order to protect civilian in particular areas.
The US amb(–foul word(s) removed–)ador to the UN, Susan Rice, said “The enforcement will rely on air power as the resolution rules out sending grounds troops. This resolution demands an immediate ceasefire and complete end to violence and attacks against civilians.”
Immediately celebratory gunfire rang out across Libya’s main rebel held city of Benghazi.
“The ‘Security Council’ has permitted the use of total force including enforcement of a ‘no-fly-zone’ to protect civilians and other areas targeted by Colonel Gadhafi, his security forces, his intelligence, and his mercenaries,” said Rice.
Gadhafi’s defense ministry warned that any foreign (–foul word(s) removed–)aults on Libya would trigger retaliation putting in danger to all traffics on air and marine in the Mediterranean.
Moammar Gadhafi had promised earlier that his forces troops would take Benghazi immediately.
“The decision has been taken. We will arrive tonight. Prepare yourselves.” Gadhafi said on state television. Showing no mercy to them. “The world needs to see Benghazi free”, he added.
The diplomat has said that air strike from a coalition will be led by United States, France and Britain. Arab countries are also participating.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said at the United Nations,” We should not arrive too late; we have very little time left. It is a matter of days; perhaps it is a matter of hours.”
“The world is now living again in great revolutions that probably change the course of history” Juppe said.
A diplomat from UN who was asking not to be identified said, “United Arab Emirates and Qatar could be joining among the Arab nations military coalition.”
However, countries that abstained their vote in UN warned about the possible open-ended conflict could be undermined the stability across the ‘oil-rich-region’.
“Destabilizing developments is one thing we need to avoid” said the Russian amb(–foul word(s) removed–)ador, calling the resolution “most unfortunate”.
Germany amb(–foul word(s) removed–)ador foresaw great risks of large scale losing life should not be underestimated.
