OVERSEAS ABSENTEE VOTING – Here is a discussion of how overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) can vote for May 2019 Election.
The May 2019 Election is fast approaching. Currently, the campaign period for both local and national political bids are ongoing. Campaign jingles can be heard everywhere and posters are posted as well.
In the local level, there will be an election for mayors, vice mayors, and councilors. In the national level, several personalities will be vying for senatorial slots.
In the Philippines, usually, the election day is declared as a holiday so everyone can vote. Private establishments also give time for their employees to cast their votes.
However, with regards to the Filipinos abroad, it won’t be declared a holiday for them. Their voting for May 2019 Election can be done through overseas absentee voting. They can vote even if they won’t go home to the Philippines.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, under the Republic Act No. 9189 or Overseas Absentee Voting, the OFWs can vote for the May 2019 Election by going to the nearest embassy or consular offices to them.
According to the report, the OFWs are given one(1) month to vote. Only the registered Pinoy workers abroad can cast their votes at consular offices or embassies.
Under the Overseas Absentee Voting, if the OFW cannot go to embassies or consular offices to vote for the May 2019 election, he or she can send her ballot and envelope through a courier back to the consul or embassy.
Reportedly, there are 1.8 milyon registered OFW voters now.
