Pinoy Workers Express Dismay After President Duterte Makes No Wage Hike Announcement During Labor Day
LABOR DAY – President Duterte saluted the Filipino workers on Labor Day but no wage hike announcement has been made.
President Rodrigo Duterte praised and lauded the Filipino workers during the observance of Labor Day on Sunday (May 1, 2022). He saluted the Pinoy employees for their great passion, integrity, and professionalism.
The President also gives a message to Filipino laborers two months before the expiry of his term. He encourages his fellow countrymen to work hard not only for themselves but also for the country.
“These qualities have not only brought economic gains to our country but have also been a source of immense pride and encouragement among our people,” Duterte said.
Unfortunately, the Filipino employees have expressed their disappointment towards President Duterte for not making any announcement regarding salary increases. Workers have been repeatedly seeking wage hikes over the six years of Duterte’s leadership.
Two months ago, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III have instructed the wage boards to hasten the processing of regional minimum wage adjustments amid the surging prices of petroleum products.
“The TUCP again reiterates its call on the government to issue wage increase orders now rather than pass the buck to the next administration,” the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said.
The wage board in Metro Manila has scheduled a hearing on May 5 regarding the salary hike appeal.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros has described the negligence of wage hike appeals despite the rising cost of basic commodities as “unjust and inhumane”.
