Sharon Cuneta earned the Megastar title due to this person
Actress-singer Sharon Cuneta is also known as the Megastar of the Philippine entertainment industry and this moniker was first used for her by this personality.
In show business in the Philippines, it is quite a big, for star status identification, to have a certain moniker, title, or tag. There is Star For All Season, Superstar, Diamond Star, and many more.
Megastar is defined as “a very famous person especially in the world of entertainment” and based on the article in PEP, veteran entertainment writer Ed de Leon was the one who gave Sharon Cuneta this moniker when the actress-singer was just 18 years old.
Ed was commissioned by the late Mina Aragon, the wife of Viva Entertainment boss Vic del Rosario, to be the think tank and publicist of Sharon’s career who is being considered by Mina as her own daughter.
Mina ask Ed for some suggestions for Sharon but at that time, he had no chance yet to watch the movies of the actress-singer. With this, he went to Baron Theater and watched To Love Again. After watching the movie, Ed said that he noticed something and this is the fact that Sharon was starting to mature.
“Sharon Cuneta must evolve. Dun kami nag-umpisa. That was the time na nagkaroon ng decision na baguhin ang image ni Sharon,” the veteran entertainment writer said.
Ed shared that when Sharon and Gabby Concepcion got married, it was considered the wedding of the year. People were overflowing on the street outside Manila Cathedral.
“Sa Roxas Boulevard, parang Independence Day. Ang daming fans, nakatayo sa kalye, kumakaway sa lahat ng sasakyan na dumaraan,” Ed said. This overwhelming show of love for Sharon gave him an idea and he searched for a prefix in dictionary that would fit this kind of scenario.
“Pagkatapos ng kasal, naghanap ako sa dictionary ng prefix. Yung mega kasi, prefix na kapag ginamit mo sa noun or anything, it multiplies by ten million. Sabi ko, puwede ang Megastar—a star to ten million people,” he said.
When Ed said this to his boss Mina, the reaction was negative because, for her, it was “pangit”. However, the veteran columnist used the Megastar Sharon Cuneta in his article and many other writers followed him.
