Pasig City Residents Got Shocked Due to Fishkill at Manggahan Floodway

MANILA – The fishkill at Manggahan Floodway has shocked the residents in Pasig City amid the surging prices of food products.

Over the past few months, a lot of Filipino people have been struggling with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The COVID-19 crisis does not only affect the public’s health but it also affects the global economy.

Many Filipinos have lost their jobs and source of income due to the effects of the health crisis. Some of our country were forced to take initiative to find another source of income or alternative source of food to fill their stomach.

The residents of Pasic and Marikina City have been fishing at Manggahan Floodway despite inclement weather condition just to save money.

On Wednesday (August 11, 2021), the residents of Pasig City were shocked after witnessing the fish kill in Manggahan Bridge. Various types of dead fish such as tilapia, kanduli, and karpa have been found floating into the floodway.

According to Barangay Manggahan Deputy Arnold Laurio, the officials are frequently monitoring the floodway especially during rainy season to check the water level but this is the first time that a fish kill has happened in the area.

“Ngayon lang po ito. Dapat wag nila pakialaman mga yan hindi naman natin alam kung nalason ba ang mga yan maapektuhan pa mga kabarangay natin. Ipaubaya na lang natin sa city government,” Laurio said.

The city officials have reported the incident to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Pasig River Coordinating Management Office said that the agency would investigate the incident.

The agency would coordinate with the Laguna Lake Development Authority since the floodway is connected to Laguna De Bay.
