Cebu Province Records Highest Count of Delta Variant Cases of COVID-19

Update on Cebu Province Delta COVID-19 Cases

CEBU PROVINCE – The Department of Health (DOH) Region 7 confirmed that 32 Delta variant cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Central Visayas.

Currently, there are worries over the possible spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in the Philippines. It is a variant of concern for its higher transmissibility which led to the collapse of the healthcare system in India. The said variant was first detected in India and a lot of people died amid the surge in the cases.

Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are also currently experiencing a spike in the COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant. Many countries temporarily restrict the entry of travelers from these nations and as well as India.

In the Philippines, travel bans are implemented on several countries and the whole nation remains under community quarantine measures. Currently, Metro Manila and the provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, and Bulacan are under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 cases in the Philippines undeniably continue to increase. Many groups are calling for stricter community quarantine measures to prevent another surge in the cases following the confirmation of local transmissions of the Delta variant.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Cebu province recorded the highest Delta variant cases of COVID-19 at 32. The Department of Health (DOH) said that it validated their suspicion of the presence of Delta variant cases amid the increase their count in the past three (3) weeks.

According to Department of Health-Region 7 director Dr. Jaime Bernadas, 19 cases of the Delta variant were logged in Lapu-Lapu City, 6 in Cebu City, 2 in the town of Samboan, 3 in Mandaue City, and 2 in Cordova town. Amid Cebu province logging the highest Delta count, the Health Official stressed that the variants will really come as the virus will mutate and what is important is that the vaccines are effective.

Currently, there is a suspicion of the local transmission of the Delta variant in Cebu but the DOH Region 7 will still do intensive checking on it. More updates may be posted soon.
