RABIYA MATEO – Philippines bet Rabiya Mateo’s introduction video for the Miss Universe 2020 pageant catches lots of attention.
The people from Iloilo City are certainly beaming with pride as the beauty from them Rabiya Mateo will be representing the country in the Miss Universe 2020. She ended the 55 dry years of Iloilo with her win. The last Ilongga who represented the Philippines on the Miss Universe stage was Louise Vail Aurelio of Jaro, Iloilo in 1965. For this year, the international pageant will be held in Florida, USA, scheduled on May 16, (May 17 in Manila).
With the competition happening several weeks from now, the candidates were introduced to the public through their introduction videos where they shared something about themselves such as their background and their advocacies. As for the PH bet, in her video, she shared her humble beginnings and how education would have greater impacts not just on her life, but on others as well.
“Now, I am a teacher and I hope that my students will see the value of education the way that I saw it,” she said. She stressed that education is a “social equalizer”, most especially to the poor families in the country. She furthered that education is the key for many people to land a job regardless of one’s background and status in life.
She also added that if she will ever be crowned as the next Miss Universe, she will be doing her best to champion the other people. Capping off her video, she said this: “We need nowadays is not just a beauty queen with pretty face, but we need phenomenal women who are not afraid to speak and to stand for things that they believe in.”

Rabiya is a physical therapy lecturer and a member of an organization in Iloilo that aims to educate children living near a dumpsite. She is now in Florida for the competition. Fans and enthusiasts can watch the international pageant live on the A2Z channel starting at 8 am.
