Meat & Chicken Vendors Held ‘Pork Holiday’ & Would Not Open Stalls Until Feb. 23 Due to Price Cap
Pork meat and chicken vendors held a pork holiday and would stop their operations until February 23, 2021 due to price ceiling.
On Monday (February 22, 2021), the vendors of pork meat and chicken at Murphy Market in Cubao, Quezon City held another “pork holiday”. The vendors would not open their stalls until February 23, 2021.
Over 50 vendors have expressed their opposition to the 60-day price ceiling because the cost of goods were too high. They could not afford to sell their products at a lower price, which will leave them with very little profit.
The price ceiling imposes P270 per kilogram of kasim and pigue, P300 per kilo for liempo, and P160 per kilo of chicken. The price cap has been implement due to the shortage of meat supply caused by the African swine fever.
Meanwhile, there are no vendors manning the stalls for pork and chicken at Commonwealth Market in Quezon City. The meat suppliers were allegedly selling pork at P260 per kilogram, which will leave them a very little profit if they would follow the price ceiling.
