Butete Kills Three In Tabiling After Eating It As “Pulutan”

PUFFER FISH KILLS THREE – After eating a pufferfish, locally known as “butete” as a “pulutan” during a drinking session, three individuals were rushed to the hospital.

Pufferfish carries with it a strong toxin called “tetrodotoxin”. Furthermore, this toxin is so potent that according to experts, it’s 1,200 times more deadly than cyanide. As such, the toxins in one pufferfish is enough to kill 30 adults.

Unfortunately, even with today’s technology and advancements, there is still no known antidote for the puffer fish toxin.

According to an article from Inquirer, Restituto Sumalinog, 63; Lucricia Anislagon, 49; and Ramil Catam-isan, 40 were rushed to the Tabango District Hospital. Sadly, all three of them didn’t make it. The three who died were all residents of Tabling village.

Meanwhile, four other individuals who ate the butete were treated at the Leyte Provincial Hospital in Palo Town.

As per the article, the regional headquarter of the Philippine National Police said Sumalinog bought the fish from Corazon Yanon. Afterward, he brought the fish to his barbeque stand. Then, he offered it as a “pulutan” during a drinking session.

At around 10:30 p.m., the three individuals began vomiting severely and passed out.
