Department of Agriculture Raises Pork Products SRP Due to Shortage Caused by ASF
The Agriculture Department has set an increase with the suggested retail price of pork products due to shortage of meat supply in the country.
The Department of Agriculture Secretary William Dar approved the SRP hike for pork products including pork shoulder and liempo. Kasim’s SRP has been raised to P260 per kilogram while liempo’s SRP is now at P280 per kilogram.
However, the price of pork products rapidly increase from the suggested retail price. Kasim’s is now ranging from P270 to P320 per kilo while liempo is priced at P280 up to P350. The pork meat shortage is allegedly caused by the African swine fever.
“The prevalence of ASF affected the supply and resulted in the increased retail prices of pork in Metro Manila. The DA is working with the private sector in transporting supply from non-ASF affected areas,” Dar said.
DA reported that around 370,393 pigs have been killed due to the African swine fever. The department also noticed several manipulative behaviors of retailers in Metro Manila causing a drastic price increase.
The department set the adjusted SRP for pork products last July 2020. The SRP considers farm gate price, freight, transport and handling.
