Antique LGU Vows Preservation Of Rare Bowl Corals In Sebaste Shoal
RARE BOWL CORALS – The LGU of Antique recently vowed to preserve the rare bowl corals that was discovered in Sebaste Shoal seabed area.
Andres Untal, chief of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) said that the bowl corals (Halomitra pileus) will be among the proposed House of Representatives measure by Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, according to a report from GMA News.
The measure aims to declare the said site as protected area. The corals were discovered by Diving enthusiast group Samurai Sabadd Extreme from the municipality of Pandan in the said province.
Based on the report, the local government of the neighboring Pandan town backed efforts that was aimed at preserving the said bowl corals.
Sebaste Shoal is near the province of Antique in the island of Panay, The shoal is 16.9km southwest to Pandan town.
Halomitra pileus are corals under the plate corals family Fungiidae. The specific epithet pileus is a Latin term which means “a pointed or close-fitting cap worn by ancient Romans”, as well as “the convex, concave, or flattened spore-bearing structure of some basidiomycetes that is attached superiorly to the stem and typically is expanded with gills or pores on the underside”, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
It is widely distributed throughout central Indo-Pacific. It also falls under Scleractinia order and the class Anthozoa.
The coral resembles an upside-down salad bowl which is up to 60 centimeters in diameter and 1 to 1.5 centimeters thick.
