Stallion striker Rufo Sanchez who is currently on loan by the Global FC for the RHB Singapore Cup made a late goal and brought victory to the Global FC against DPMM Brunei on Wednesday in Singapore.
Global scored a hard-earned victory in the first game of the 2-leg quarterfinals series against DPMM Brunei. The game ended with a 1-nil scorecard in favor of the Philippines.

The lone goal for Global FC came after a handball whistle to Hendra Azam, Global was awarded with a free kick from 40 yards out, Jeffrey Christiaens lofted a left-footer into the throng of players and Spanish player Rufo Sanchez redirected it with his head into the low right corner of the goal past Brunei’s keeper Wardun Yussof.
Although the Philippine team Global FC dominated most of the possessions they failed score a goal. Azkals mainstay Carli De Murga could have started the scoring in the 18th minute but his header was off the cross bar. Rufo also made chances eight minutes after De Murga’s miss but failed to score. Paul Mulders also failed in his long attempt at around 41st minutes.
The DPMM Brunei have their chances during the 55th minutes when their Brazilian player Roberto Tosi nearly scored with a header but was wide enough, he was also impressive with ball-handling skills. Tosi also made an attempt through a long-range shot to goal at around 78th minute their best shot of the game but it was saved by Global’s keeper.
The Game Two of the quaterfinals series will be held this coming Saturday night. Meanwhile the other Filipino club, the Loyola Meralco Sparks will battle it out against Tanjong United of Singapore in Game 1 of their quarterfinal series.
