FOUR AMERICANS OPEN BAR – A newly opened wine bar was named “Barkada”, which gained mixed reactions from Filipino netizens.

According to GMA, “Barkada” is a wine bar found on U Street in Washington D.C. It is the brain child of Americans Anthony, Nick, Nate and Sebastian.

Of course, some Filipino netizens were not happy for having the term “barkada” used as a name for the wine bar, further slamming them for cultural appropriation.

Many have also flooded in the bar’s IG account and told them to change the name. Here are some of the negative comments:

“Change your name”

The management further apologized in their recent post.

“We apologize to all we offended, and to our community we hope to serve. It was never our intention to appropriate or capitalize on the Filipino culture and we recognize we fell short in engaging more of the Filipino community,” it read based on the report.

However, it does not end there. There are some Filipinos who caught wind of the incident and urged the bar to keep the name since they liked it.

They also urged the bar owners not to mind the bashers for their “gatekeeping”. Here are some of the following comments:

“Please do not let those *** Fil-Ams win. Please keep the name of your business as is. It’s not an exaggeration to tell you that more than 90% of Filipinos would like you to keep your business name.”

“Don’t change the name! Keep it please..”

“Thank you for using a Filipino word as your wine bar’s name. Hope you can consider to include Pinoy branded drinks in your menu. More power to you! 💙”
