Mark Zuckerberg Promises Review On Content After Backlash
ZUCKERBERG PROMISES REVIEW ON CONTENT – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to review policies on content.
The issue began when Facebook decided to leave up President Donald Trump‘s post saying “When the looting starts, the shooting starts. Previously, Trump also had a run-in with Twitter as the social media platform deleted the same post.
Trump made the post following the protests over the death of George Floyd. However, Zuckerberg did not make any promises for specific policy changes.
There were also several reports that Facebook staff have walked off the job after claiming Zuckerberg continued to find new excuses not to filter out Trump’s posts.
According to an article from India Times, Zuckerberg said:
I know many of you think we should have labeled the President’s posts in some way last week.
We’re going to review our policies allowing discussion and threats of state use of force to see if there are any amendments we should adopt.
Furthermore, he said that his team would review the potential options for handling or content violations from the binary “leave-it-up or take-it-down decisions”. Along with this, Zuckerberg said his social media platform would be more transparent in regards to its decision-making.
In his defence, Zuckerberg explained that although he found Trump’s posts “deeply offensive”, they were not violations of the company policy against incitements to violence.
Currently, Facebook can either leave a post up or take it down. However, following this issue, he said that more options would be made available. But, he did admit that he was worried that this new approach could lead Facebook to editorialize content it doesn’t like regardless of violations of policies
