Facebook Blocks State-Controlled Posts’ Advertisements Under New Policy

FACEBOOK BLOCKS STATE-CONTROLLED POSTS – According to Facebook’s cybersecurity head, media posts under the influence of governments will have their ads blocked.

The social media giant is following through on a plan to label state-controlled news publishers primarily to dissuade biased reporting. If the government was the one reporting about the government, there would already be bias.

Based on an article from GMA, Nathaniel Gleicher, head of Facebook’s cyber-security division stated:

We believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government

Furthermore, Gleicher announced that Facebook would start to add labels to news outlets that may be influenced by the government. Also, the social media giant planned to block these ads entirely ahead of the US presidential election in November.

As per the article, this was done to provide an extra layer of protection against various types of foreign influence in public discourse.

Facebook defines state-controlled media as any state-owned outlet’s posts and included editorial content, financial backing outlets, and more. Meanwhile, the labels placed by Facebook would appear globally in Facebook’s advertising library.

If we determine that there are enough protections in place to ensure editorial independence, we will not apply the label

The move was set in motion after Facebook received scrutiny for failing to block foreign interference during the 2016 US election. It was also part of a heated debated about how it handles misinformation and inflammatory posts, including that of POTUS.
