Study Suggests COVID-19 Can Linger In Men’s Testicles Causing More Severe Illness
COVID-19 CAN LINGER IN TESTICLES – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, being a man may prove to be a disadvantage.
According to a recent study, the new coronavirus may linger in the testicles. Potentially, males could be prone to longer, more severe symptoms of the virus. Meanwhile, in a previous article, we also learned the virus could damage other parts of the body aside from the lungs.
Based on an article from the New York Post, researchers in Mumbai, India tracked the recovery of 68 patients. The study was done to monitor the disparity of the virus between genders.
Furthermore, the research suggested that men took a worse toll than women. This was due to the virus attaching itself to to a protein that could abundantly be found in the testicles.
As per the article, this protein is known as angiotensin converting enzyme 2, or ACE2 is present in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract and the heart. Moreover, large quantities of this protein could also be found in testicles.
However, even if you have strong immune system, the virus may still thrive in the testicles. This is because the testicles are walled off from the body’s immune system. As such, the virus could stay inside the body for longer periods.
Furthermore, the study demonstrated that males subjects had significantly delayed viral clearance. According to the report, men could have a delayed viral clearance of at least 2 days.
Meanwhile, there are reports from South Korea, Italy, and New York that stated men were dying at higher rates than females. Likewise, the study in Mumbai may be an explanation to the phenomenon.
