Rep. Salceda said that community quarantine has this effect on PH’s economy
Albay Congressman Joey Salceda said that the community quarantine that was implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19 also prevented the economic recession in the Philippines.
Amid the health crisis in the country, there were those who went against the Luzon-wide quarantine. However, according to Rep. Salceda, this has brought a positive thing for the economy of the Philippines.
Based on the report from GMA News Online, the coronavirus may only be eliminated through an economic activity shutdown. “Ang virus na ito ay nagta-thrive through economic activity. So kailangan natin talaga na pigilan muna yung pagtakbo ng ekonomiya kaya nga may work stoppage, class suspension,” the lawmaker said.
He also said that if the community quarantine was not implemented and there were “mass community transmission or runaway infections”, the worse thing could happen. “Mas lalong mawawalan ng kumpiyansa sa loob ng ating sistema at lalong lalala, so baka magkaroon ng recession,” Salceda said.
The lawmaker also said that he is expecting that the Philippines could still catch up after the COVID-19 crisis. He has this expectation despite this projection. “Sa pananaw ko ay kaya pa ng Pilipinas na mag-grow faster than the other countries in the world. Nakikita ko kaya pa natin mag-3% GDP growth rate,” he added.
Based on the report, on Monday, during the special session, Congress will seek to bridge these economic gaps. This aims to enact measures as a response to the COVID-19 health crisis in the country. In the said special session, it is expected that lawmakers will approve a bill allowing President Rodrigo Duterte to realign funds in line with the current crisis in the Philippines.
