Benguet Sakura park is the newest tourist spot in Baguio.
BENGUET SAKURA PARK – Baguio brought Japan’s cherry blossoms here in the Philippines through this new destination called Haight’s Place in Benguet.
More and more places are being discovered and getting viral on social media. This way, many travelers will be attracted to visit. And Philippines is certainly one archipelago filled with so much gems coming from beach destinations to thrilling adventures.
And should be added in your travel bucket list is the Benguet Sakura park called Haight’s Place where you don’t have to go to Japan to experience it because Benguet is bringing it right in our country. This can be found in Atok, Benguet to which the Sakura have actually started blooming in 2018.
According to PEP, the trees were given as gifts by the Kochi Prefecture and Japanese embassy to the province of Benguet in 2016 as they celebrated the 40th year anniversary of their ties. More than a hundred have been planted in 2015 but only few survived. Based on Japanese botanist Kiyuharu Yamamoto, only a few survived because the trees were planted at the wrong time of the year.
2016 came along with the trees as gifts and planted during the rainy season. Atok is the best place to plant it because its temperature is similar to that of Japan’s. Edward Haights, the caretaker, said that sakura can only grow in cold weather.
He said, “Pakonti-konti lang siya pero it is a good symbol na talagang hiyang siya dito, na namumulaklak siya. Ang goal sana namin, lumaki iyong cherry blossom. In ten years time, ine-expect namin na malalaki na iyong tree.”
Moreover, sakura blossoms in Benguet between March to April and lasts only for only two weeks. Aside from the cherry blossoms, there’s also a vast field of pink daisies. You can reach Atok by taking a three-hour bus/car ride from Baguio.
