Severe Weather Leaves Over 130 People Dead In Pakistan, Afghanistan
SEVERE WEATHER – More than 130 people dead as severe weather struck parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Natural disasters were responsible for the deaths of thousands of people worldwide. These disasters include hurricanes, landslides, wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, droughts, and heatwaves.
The second most active volcano in the Philippines, Taal volcano erupted on Sunday, January 12. Thousands of residents were forced to leave their homes to move to safer grounds. One person died in a road crash amid heavy ashfall.
Meanwhile, according to Channel News Asia, parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan were hit by severe weather a few days ago. The harsh weather, flooding, and avalanches caused the death of more than 130 people.
The officials in both countries said at least 93 people died and 76 suffered injuries across Pakistan while 39 people died in Afghanistan.
According to the report, the forecasts said more unpleasant weather is on the way. The State Disaster Management Authority said Pakistani Kashmir was the worst-hit area, with 62 people dead and 10 others missing.
SDMA said the Neelum Valley in Kashmir triggered avalanches. “An avalanche hit their village, 10 people are still missing,” it said.
Based on the report, the officials said the authorities closed several highways and roads in the country’s mountainous areas. The Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter to speak about the incident. “The severe snowfalls and landslides in AJK have cause misery and deaths,” he said.
The spokesman for the Natural Disaster Management Authority, Ahmad Tamim Azimi, said more than 300 houses were partially damaged or destroyed. “A cold snap, heavy snowfall and rains that started two weeks ago have caused damage,” he said.
