Padada, Davao Del Sur Declares State of Calamity Following 6.9 Magnitude Quake
PADADA DECLARES STATE OF CALAMITY – The town of Padada in Davao del Sur declared a state of calamity following the 6.9 magnitude quake on Sunday.
The areas of Mindanao have been hit by several quakes within the last months. This time, Davao Del Sur suffered from another quake.
According to an article from CNN, Padada Mayor Pedro Caminero gave the announcement on Monday morning after less than 24 hours of the quake. In addition to this, two deaths have been confirmed.
Meanwhile, there are still seven people missing after the three-story Southern Trade grocery fell due to the intense shaking. Also, the Saint Michael Parish church sustained damages as well.
As per the article, retrieval officers of Padada told media that a series of aftershocks have halted their search and rescue efforts inside the Southern Trade grocery store where seven victims were still inside.
The quake hit Davao del Sur at around 2:11 p.m. on Sunday. As recorded by Phivolcs, there were several aftershocks that happen at 2:32 PM, 2:52 PM, 02:58 PM, 3:09 PM, 3:23 PM, 3:33 PM and 3:39 PM.
Following this, as of 7:00 a.m., PHILVOCS recorded a whopping 479 aftershocks. With this, the DOST Undersecretary Renato Solidum advised the public to prepare for more aftershocks within 24 hours or even the week.
Solidum added that the quake was most probably caused by the Tangbulan fault that produced large earthquakes. Following this, he also told residents to avoid houses and buildings damaged by the quake until they have been inspected.
