Health Clues Right On Your Tongue
TONGUE HEALTH – If you see something strange in the mirror don’t worry. Often times it’s not some strange disease, but it could show something important about your health.
Here are the health clues according to The Healthy.
Strawberry Red:
If you see your tongue being as red as a strawberry it may indicate that you have a vitamin deficiency.
A bright red tongue could mean that your body lacks iron or vitamin B12. If you have this kind of deficiency you may experience fatigue, weakness, balance problems and trouble with memory.
Black or Brown Fuzz
If you see this type of coloration in your tongue then you probably don’t have the best oral hygiene or tongue health.
Although it may look nasty, having a black hairy tongue (that’s exactly what it’s called) isn’t cause for major concerns. These are generally caused by papillae worn down by chewing and drinking.
Sometimes they become overgrown which leads to it being more susceptible to bacteria or discoloration from food. Usually, black hairy tongue is caused by smoking, drinking coffee or poor dental hygiene.
Cottage Cheese White
When you see this type of coloration it could mean that you have a yeast infection. A white-coated tongue may already have thrush.
Thrush is an oral yeast infections due to overproduction of candida. The symptom is often connected to antibiotics.
According to Dr. Tylor, the tongue is home to naturally occuring bacteria and yeast. When we take antibiotics, it selectively kills some bacteria, this could enable yeast, which is not killed, to take over.
Wrinkles
According to the article by The Healthy, if you can see wrinkles on your tongue, then you’re just getting old. That’s right, even our tongues can reveal signs of aging.
Cracks on your tongue are generally harmless. However, poor dental hygiene could potentially allow bacteria and viruses to get into the crevices.
Small White Patches
This could indicate that something is irritating your mouth. These painless white patches are due to an excess growth of cells.
These patches are often linked to smoking. These lesions carry a 5-17% chance of developing into cancer.
Red Lesions
If you have persistent red lesions that don’t go away, it is possible that you have a more serious tongue disease. Get it checked asap!
If you’re in your youth and health and have this, it means that something is wrong. Oral cancer could also be due to the human papilloma virus, or HPV.
This needs to be checked even if it doesn’t hurt. Several oral cancers don’t hurt in their early stages.
