The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao or BARMM for short is one of the regions in Mindanao, one of the three island groups in the Philippines. It is also known in Arabic as Munṭiqah banjisāmūrū dhātiyyah al-ḥukm (منطقة بانجسامورو ذاتية الحكم) or formerly Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The name Bangsamoro is a portmanteau of two Malay words bangsa, meaning rice, and moro, meaning people. Its regional center is Cotabato City in Maguindanao.

The region has five regions and has a population of more than 2 million people, as of 2015. Its regional center is Butuan and is assigned to Region XIII.

Provinces

Here are the following six provinces:

  • Basilan (Capital: Lamitan)
    • Wilayan Basilanin is an island province of the region. It is the largest and northernmost province in the Sulu Archipelago.
  • Lanao del Sur (Capital: Marawi)
    • Pagabagatan Ranao is one of the provinces of the region that is in the island of Mindanao.
  • Maguindanao (Capital: Buluan)
    • It is another of the two provinces of this region that is in the island of Mindanao. Its executive capital is Buluan but its legislative is the province of Sultan Kudarat in Soccsksargen.
  • Sulu (Capital: Jolo)
    • Wilāya sin Lupa’ Sūg is the centermost island province of the Sulu Archipelago
  • Tawi-Tawi (Capital: Bongao)
    • Tawi-Tawi is the southernmost island province in the Sulu Archipelago, the region and furthermore, the country.
