Applying menthol
The cooling effect of menthol can relieve pain and itching. According to a study, pregnant women who applied sesame oil with peppermint oil on areas of itchy skin twice a day for 2 weeks has a significant reduction of itching severity compared to those who applied oil without peppermint.
Cooling and wet wrap therapy
Applying a cold, wet cloth or ice pack to the affected area for 5–10 minutes is a recommendation from the American Academy of Dermatology. You can also keep your lotion and moisturizing cream inside the refrigerator. In doing the wet wrap therapy, just apply water-soaked fabric wraps made of gauze or surgical netting to areas of itchy skin.
Here are the steps in using wet wrap therapy, according to NEA:
- Wet a section of gauze in warm water
- Wrap the itchy area of skin with the gauze.
- Wrap it with a dry piece of gauze
- Carefully put on soft, cotton pajamas, taking care not to disturb the bandages.
- Leave the bandages on for several hours or you do this overnight.
Apply apple cider vinegar
This work more effectively on the itchy scalp. Just dilute the vinegar in water using a 1-to-1 ratio. Then, apply the solution on the scalp and leave it to dry. Rinse after with lukewarm water.
Baking soda
In using this home remedy, just add one-quarter of a cup of baking soda to a warm bath. Another option is to combine baking soda with a small amount of water in order to make a paste. Then, apply the mixture directly on the affected area.
As they say, prevention is better than cure, so it is much better to avoid irritants that will cause itchy skin.
