New Sardine Species Found In Some Parts of PH Waters
A new sardine species called “Sardinella Pacifica” has been found in Manila Bay and other parts of the Philippine waters.
Sardinella Pacifica, a new species of sardines has been discovered in some parts of the country that resembles Sardinella fimbriata.
Japanese taxonomists Harutaka Hata and Hiroyuki Motomura said on their peer-reviewed article journal that the new sardine species can be only found in the Philippines.
The Japanese experts revealed that Sardinella Pacifica could be only found in the waters of Manila Bay, Quezon, Sorsogon, and Samar.
“During a revisionary study of Sardinella, 21 specimens of a clupeid fish from the Philippines were found to be characterized by a unique combination of scales with centrally discontinuous striae, a dark spot on the dorsal-fin origin, and low counts of lateral scales in the longtitudinal and pseudobranchial filaments. They are described herein as a new species of Sardinella,” the journal said.
Advocacy group Oceana Philippines vice president Gloria Estenzo Ramos appealed to President Duterte to cancel the pending reclamation projects in Manila Bay to protect the marine life.
As of now, there are 22 lined up reclamation projects in Manila Bay covering around 20,000 hectares, according to some reports.
