Palace on Catriona Gray’s stand on lowering the age of criminal liability: “she may have been misinformed”
The Malacañang Palace reacted to the stand of Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray on lowering the age of criminal liability.
It can be recalled that the House panel approved the bill seeking for a lower age of criminal liability in the Philippines from 15 years old down to 9 years old.
Republic Act No. 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 is set to be amended.
In line with this, the beauty queen expressed her side regarding the issue on Wednesday, a day before her homecoming parade.
Based on the report from Inquirer, Catriona Gray stated that the government should focus to the root why these children are committing crimes.
She stressed out that these children might just be influenced by their environment or the circumstances they are into.
The beauty queen added, “And it really is probably a consequence of their circumstance or their environment or external pressure. So [as] a nation, I feel like we should focus on eradicating those external pressures.”
With regards to this statement from the reigning Miss Universe, the Palace expressed reaction.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said, “She should be educated…ibig sabihin ng educated, she may have been misinformed of the facts given that the opposition to the lowering (of the minimum age of criminal responsibility) comes from ‘yung mga dating kritiko ng administrasyon.”
