A Case of African Swine Fever Reaches ASEAN
AFRICAN SWINE FEVER – A case of the African Swine Fever was recently detected in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The banning of pork imports from Vietnam is expected to be implemented anytime from now following the recent alarming incident of a sample from Vietnam testing positive in the ASF virus.
Based on a recent report in The Philippine Star, Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol told PhilStar that his department will soon release an order over the pork import banning with regards to Vietnam.
The banning of the pork import from Vietnam is in line with the pursuit of the government to protect the local hog industry in the Philippines amounting to Php 200-billion.
According to the report, recently, a case of African Swine Fever has been detected over ASEAN. A sample from Vietnam tested positive in the said virus prompting security tightening.
side from the banning of pork import from Vietnam, the Agriculture Secretary also ordered all the areas tasked for quarantine to check regarding the possible entry of pork products through seaports and airports.
Samahang Industry ng Agrikultura (SINAG) also asked the DA to make sure that those people coming from Vietnam and other nations affected by the ASF will undergo full checking in airports.
Speaking to The Star, SINAG Chairman Rosendo So expressed that although not much of the PH import is from Vietnam, the risk is on what tourists can bring to the country.
Based on the report, it was the Taiwanese authorities which discovered the ASF in certain products coming from China. They have already tightened their security since its detection last year. It was recently when a sample from Vietnam also tested positive.
