PNP Record on Politician Deaths Since 2016 Revealed by DILG

DILG – Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Bernardo Florece Jr. revealed the record of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on politicians’ deaths since July 2016.

Not only the government but as well as the public is alarmed by the increasing number of politicians who died. Last year, it was really a series of deaths that involved mayors of several cities.

One of those who were unexpectedly attacked was Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili. It was during a flag ceremony in front of the city hall when the Mayor was shot leading to his demise.

Following the late Mayor Halili, several other mayors and vice mayors lost their lives in incidents that left their family, relatives, friends, and constituents crying for justice.

Recently, alarmed by the increasing number of politicians’ deaths, the Senate lodged a probe into the matter. It is led by Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.

Based on a recent report in PhilStar, during the Senate inquiry, the DILG revealed the record of PNP with regards to the politician deaths since July 2016.

According to DILG Undersecretary Bernardo Florece Jr., the PNP recorded a total of 19 politician deaths from July 2016 until January 2019. 12 are mayors and the rest are vice mayors.

Based on the report, the Interior Undersecretary expressed that 6 of the 19 cases were already resolved. With regards to the other cases, the investigation is ongoing.

Florece also expressed that he would furnish a copy of the list of councilors and barangay officials who were also attacked.

Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino asked the Interior department and the PNP to submit a complete list of politician deaths from 2010 until 2016 and then 2016 up to the present.

Based on the report, at the hearing, Sen. Ping Lacson made an order regarding the controversial death of Richard Santillan, security aide of Glenn Chong, a lawyer and senatorial candidate.

Lacson asked the PNP to let the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have the report on the probe of the death of Santillan.
