Johanne Jazmin Tan Jabines, a UP student has won the world’s largest public speaking competition in London.
Last week, the 20-year-old Pinay student bagged the top prize at the English Speaking Union’s International Public Speaking Competition.
Jabines’ five-minute performance on stage amazed the competition judges and the global audience after beating 51 other contestants from different countries.
The young Pinay’s winning speech, entitled “One Hour at A Time,” discusses the lives of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and undocumented immigrants.
The contestants qualified for the grand finals were asked to prepare their speeches with the theme “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”
The student from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman stemmed her speech from her reunion with an aunt working as a teacher in Thailand who had the only hour during her layover in Manila.
“Our clock started ticking when a voice announced the arrival of her flight. As soon as I saw my aunt pass through the airport gates, I knew. I am lucky to have a family member who could make the journey back,” Jabines said in her speech at the Royal Institution.
The UP student was the third Filipino to win the world’s largest public speaking competition.
The young champion is a third-year college student taking a course in business administration and accountancy.
She also said that her speech resonated with people from other nations as she discussed the universal experiences of families in the age of migration.
“I have received a lot of positive reactions and heartfelt comments even from strangers, thanking me for talking about our OFWs,” Jabines said quoted by Inquirer.
