Warning On Possible Fish Kill During Rainy Season Released By BFAR-Bicol
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Bicol has warned and reminded the public of possible fish kill during the rainy seasons.
Fish kill is also known as fish die-off wherein huge number of fish dies due to numerous reasons. The most common factors of fish kill might be reduced oxygen in the water, overpopulation, algae bloom, drought, an increase of water temperature, or infection.
Recently, Nonie Enolva, the spokesman of BFAR-Bicol told the cage operators to secure and take good care of their fishes due to the possible fish kill when huge waves come brought by the rainy season.
As of now, there are more than a thousand cage operators in the region could lose their livelihoods if fish kill would strike the province. Fish business is one of the major livelihood of the residents in Bicol.
Enolva also advised the cage operators to pull out all the fishes that are ready for harvest before the possible fish kill strikes.
The Bureau spokesman also advised the residents leaving near the coastal areas of Bicol Region to listen first for weather updates before fishing. They were also prohibited from sailing in the ocean if gale warning was raised
