Gerald Anderson Visits Wake of Rene Baterbonia & Moves Grieving Mother to a Brief Smile
GERALD ANDERSON – The passing of Rene Baterbonia has left a heavy mark on both the basketball and entertainment communities, especially after Gerald Anderson’s heartfelt tribute.
Kapamilya actor Gerald Anderson earned praise after personally visiting the wake of late student-athlete Rene Baterbonia, bringing a moment of comfort to the grieving family.
Ateneo de Davao Blue Knights high school and college coach Jess Linus Evangelio, more popularly known as Coach Jess, expressed his gratitude to the actor for taking the time to pay his respects to the young athlete.
On Saturday, June 13, Coach Jess shared photos on Facebook showing Gerald together with Rene’s mother, Rovelyn Baterbonia, during the wake. The coach noted how the actor’s presence briefly eased the pain of a mother mourning the loss of her son.
“Thank you so much Gerald Anderson gypa smile nimo mama ni Rene maski kadali,” wrote Coach Jess in his post.
According to him, Gerald was able to bring a temporary smile to Rene’s mother despite the heavy grief their family continues to endure following the young athlete’s passing.
Even before attending the wake, Gerald had already expressed sadness over the tragic loss of Rene. The actor shared that he saw great potential in the young basketball player and believed he had a bright future ahead of him.
Gerald revealed that he had the opportunity to play basketball with Rene about two months before the tragedy. During that time, he noticed the young athlete’s skills and promise on the court.
“Yang batang yan, kalaro ko two months ago pa yun. He had a very bright future. Tragedy talaga.
“Nakakadurog ng puso, especially for someone in the basketball world, tapos nakita mo yung potential ng bata,” said Gerald.
Coach Jess served as Rene’s mentor throughout his years in high school at Ateneo de Davao University. He also guided the athlete during the Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) competitions and the Palarong Pambansa over the past six years.
Rene’s passing has left a deep void in the local basketball community, with many mourning the loss of a young athlete whose promising future was cut short too soon.
