Filipino Conjoined Twins Finally Separated After 18 Hour Life Changing Surgery

Miracle Surgery Gives Filipino Conjoined Twins a Second Chance at Life

CONJOINED TWINS – Hope turned into reality as Filipino conjoined twins were finally given a chance to live separate lives after years of uncertainty.

A pair of Filipino conjoined twins has successfully undergone a life-changing operation in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant medical milestone for their family and the international team of specialists who handled the case.

Seven-year-old twins Maurice Ann and Klea Misa from Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, were previously joined at the head, a rare and highly complex condition known as craniopagus. Their separation surgery was performed at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh, led by pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Moutasem Azzubi, along with a team of around 30 medical professionals.

The procedure was carried out in five intricate stages and lasted nearly 18.5 hours. The operation was organized and funded by the Saudi aid agency KSrelief under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, headed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah.

Due to the twins’ critical condition—including shared brain structures and additional complications involving Klea’s heart and kidneys—specialists spent almost a year carefully preparing for the delicate surgery. The case was considered one of the most challenging in the world.

Following the successful operation, the twins’ mother, Maricel Misa, expressed overwhelming relief and gratitude.

“Our prayers were answered … Hearing that the surgery was successful, it felt like a miracle. I felt so much relief, happiness and gratitude to the doctors, and everyone who helped our twins,” she said in a media interview.

She added that her daughters are still under close observation as they continue to recover.

“Right now our twins are still recovering, they are being closely monitored by the doctors and nurses to make sure everything continues to go well.”

Doctors remain optimistic about the twins’ recovery, while their family hopes they will grow up healthy and eventually achieve their dreams.

According to medical experts, Maurice Ann and Klea are the 70th pair of conjoined twins successfully separated under the program, and the third pair from the Philippines. Previous Filipino cases were also successfully handled in 2004 and 2024.

Conjoined twins are an extremely rare condition, occurring in approximately one in every 50,000 to 60,000 births worldwide.
