Jeepney Driver Stop Working & Sleep on Streets Amidst Surging Oil Prices

A jeepney driver was forced to stop working and sleep on the streets in Cubao, Quezon City, due to the rising fuel prices.

The jeepney driver Dione Palmores struggles as the rising cost of diesel forced him to stop working and live on the streets. His main source of income is no longer enough to support even his daily needs.

When diesel prices went beyond P100 per liter, Dione could no longer keep up with the expenses of operating his jeepney. He shared that a single trip would cost him around P800 in fuel, while his earnings would only reach about P600.

“Tumigil na ako nung naging P116 ‘yung diesel, minsan wala na akong kinikita talaga. Kasi magkano ‘yung isang ikot ko, P800 ‘yung isang diesel eh, ‘yung koleksyon ko P600 lang, aabot ng dalawang daan,” Dione said.

Instead of making a profit, he ended up losing money each day. Because of this, he decided to return the jeepney to its operator and stop driving for now.

With no steady income, Dione found another way to survive. At a bus terminal in Cubao, Quezon City, he now works as a porter, helping passengers carry their heavy bags. The small amount he earns is just enough to get him through the day.

To save money, he chooses to sleep on the sidewalk near the terminal. Despite his situation, Dione continues to think about his family in Bicol, especially his child who is still studying. He does his best to set aside money so he can send support whenever he can.

The increase in fuel prices has affected many drivers like Dione. Global tensions have made fuel more expensive, making it harder for transport workers to earn a living. While the government has provided some assistance like cash aid and fuel subsidies, many drivers are still struggling to cope.
