Class Suspensions Declared on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) Due to Tsunami Warning Following Magnitude 8.8 Russia Quake

WALANG PASOK – Some local government units have declared class suspensions in several areas due to a tsunami warning. 

On Wednesday (July 30, 2025), a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The powerful tremor was felt in several areas and triggered multiple tsunami alerts. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised a tsunami alert in 22 provinces. The agency advised residents living near the shoreline to move to higher ground for safety. 

Class Suspensions

We are monitoring the four coastal villages through our CCTVs, and disaster response personnel are also in those areas to ensure that nobody will be at the beach until the tsunami warning is over,” said John Sevilla, executive officer of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. 

Boat owners in harbors or shallow coastal waters were also urged to move away from the waterfront. 

Class Suspensions

Following the tsunami advisory, several local government units announced class suspensions to ensure public safety. 

Here is the list of areas affected by class suspensions: 

  • Davao Oriental – Elementary to college (Public and Private), work in government offices, near tsunami prone areas, closure of tourism establishments and beach resorts 
  • Davao Occidental – All schools located in coastal barangays 
  • Panabo City, Davao del Norte – Elementary and high school (Public and Private)
  • Davao de Oro (schools in coastal barangays)
  • Davao del Sur (Sta. Cruz, Hagonoy, Padada, Sulop, Malalag, coastal areas in Digos City)

Meanwhile, less than one meter tsunami waves are expected in the following areas: 

  • Batanes Group of Islands 
  • Cagayan 
  • Isabela 
  • Aurora 
  • Quezon 
  • Camarines Norte 
  • Camarines Sur 
  • Albay 
  • Sorsogon 
  • Catanduanes 
  • Northern Samar 
  • Eastern Samar 
  • Leyte 
  • Southern Leyte 
  • Dinagat Islands 
  • Surigao del Norte 
  • Surigao del Sur 
  • Davao del Norte 
  • Davao Oriental 
  • Davao Occidental 
  • Davao del Sur 
  • Davao de Oro
