Vendor Dies After Runaway Bus Backs Up on Commonwealth Avenue
A vendor tragically lost her life after being run over and dragged by a city bus on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
On Sunday afternoon (July 13, 2025), a city bus suddenly rolled backward and dragged a 53‑year‑old street vendor beneath its wheels. The accident happened around 1:00 pm despite a quick rescue, the woman passed away in the hospital around 6:00 pm.
Traffic investigators said the driver had just let passengers off when the bus’s air‑brake system failed. Without stopping power, the large vehicle shot downhill in reverse, bumping into an SUV and a motorcycle before striking the vendor’s small stall near the curb.

Witnesses recalled the vendor trying to save her goods moments before the bus crushed her legs and pulled her about four meters. The impact left severe wounds on both thighs and caused heavy blood loss.
“Naipit po siya nung gulong ng kaliwang bahagi ng truck. Marami na pong mga dugo ‘yung nawala sa kanya. ‘Yung mga laman po niya sa bandang legs maraming sugat,” QCPD Traffic Sector 5 Capt. Joey Salvadico said.
Barangay first responders arrived within minutes, but freeing the victim was difficult. Workers had to jack up the left rear side of the bus because her lower body was pinned between the twin tires.
The rescue took nearly twenty minutes, delaying her transfer to the nearby hospital and lowering her chances of survival.
Other vendors described a scene of panic as people shouted warnings and scrambled away from the rolling bus. Some stalls were smashed, and several parked vehicles were dented, adding property damage to the day’s grim toll.
The driver, now in police custody, faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple counts of property damage. Investigators will also inspect the bus’s maintenance records to find out why the brakes failed.
Friends and fellow vendors lit candles at the accident site, mourning a hardworking woman known for her warm smile and steady presence. They are calling on transport operators to make sure their buses are safe, hoping no other family will endure the same heartbreaking loss.
