DepEd has no answer yet for the proposed P50K salary for entry-level teachers
Makabayan bloc lawmakers filed the House Bill 9920 which would provide the proposed P50K salary for entry-level teachers and the Department of Education (DepEd) has “no comment” on this, for now.
It is believed that teaching is one of the noblest professions. For some, it is not just a job but a calling. It takes a lot of good virtues to be a teacher as these virtues will be handed down to the future key players of the world.
However, there are parts of the world, including the Philippines, where teaching is not considered a high-paying job.
With regard to the lawmakers’ initiative to alleviate the financial status of teachers, DepEd has no answer yet, based on the report from Pilipino Star Ngayon.
The Salary Grade 11 only reaches P22,316 to P24,391 and this was based on the Salary Standardization Law. DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa said that they “cannot comment on the amount because we are still waiting for the study from the World Bank.”
For now, they are “expecting preliminary results from the World Bank in a few weeks. They are just requesting for additional data from DepEd which we are now processing.”
Of course, the teachers deserve a salary increase because of their hard work. Many teachers sacrifice a portion of their time to rest and spend with their loved ones just to do their duties.
It is a common scenario that after school hours, and even while they are at home, they still do paperwork, planning, and preparing for the next day’s lesson. The proposed P50K salary for entry-level teachers is quite reasonable, I think.
However, teachers should make sure that they will compensate for this with their skills. Educational institutions must improve the standards and the education system as well. There are a lot of dedicated teachers but there are also those who lack the needed concern to educate the students and the willing heart to act as a second parent.
Good teachers can somehow ensure that students will learn well and an improved education system will go hand in hand with this.
