#WalangPasok: Class Suspensions for Thursday (January 4, 2024)

Class Suspensions for Thursday (January 4, 2024) Due to Power Outages

WALANG PASOK – Several local government units declared class suspensions in some areas due to power outages.

A day after the New Year’s Day celebration, a region-wide power outage hit Western Visayas particularly over the islands of Panay and Guimaras including some areas in Negros Island. Ilonggos expressed their frustrations over the blackouts.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is blaming the unscheduled maintenance shutdowns of the largest power plants in Panay for the power outage resulting in work interruption and inconvenience to the consumers.

Class Suspensions

NGCP explained that an internal issue caused the tripping of the Panay Energy Development Corp. Unit 1 at 12:06 p.m. on January 2, 2024 (Tuesday). PEDC Unit 2 and other plants also tripped at 2:19 pm.

Unfortunately, other power plants tripped off affecting the consumers of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative Inc.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas ordered the Department of Energy and NGCP to address the power outage quickly.

Class Suspensions

“NGCP is in a position to anticipate system disturbance such as what happened on Tuesday, which unfortunately resulted in the isolation of Panay from the rest of the Visayas grid due to the simultaneous tripping of power plants that caused multiple power interruptions affecting other power plants and distribution utilities,” DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara said.

On Thursday (January 4, 2024), various local government units have declared class suspensions in the following areas due to power issues:

Aklan

  • Numancia – all levels, public and private

Capiz

  • Dumarao – all levels, public and private

Iloilo

  • Bingawan – all levels
  • Iloilo City – all levels, public and private
  • Pavia – all levels, except college
