Pura Luka Vega still insists that he has done nothing wrong
Drag queen Pura Luka Vega is indeed as stubborn as a mule as he refuses to apologize and still clings to his belief that there is nothing wrong with what he did.
Pura Luka, born Amadeus Fernando Pagente, was arrested on October 4 because of the complaints filed by religious groups such as “Hijos del Nazareno – Central” and “Philippines for Jesus Movement”.
The drag queen was accused of doing immoral doctrines, obscene publications, and exhibition and indecent shows.
This is because of his viral video in which he was seen dressed like the “Jesus” of Roman Catholic and even used the song “Ama Namin.” His drag act did not sit well with many, even with those who were non-Catholic believers.
Because of that, he was declared persona non grata in several cities and provinces. Despite the backlash, Pura Luka Vega remained firm in his conviction that there was nothing wrong with what he did.
His fellow drag queens also defended him. The hashtag #FreePuraLukaVega trended on X (Twitter) as a show of support for him. There were those who said that it was an expression of his faith and his art.
In an interview on GMA News, Pura Luka said, “My intention was never to mock. I also would not like to invalidate their feelings. If they feel hurt or they feel offended, it’s their right to feel such.”
Yes, it has offended certain religious groups while some thought that Pura Luka’s act is not a sin. Although he has no intention to mock whatsoever, it is a fact that there were people who were hurt by what he had done.
As they say, respect begets respect. This is the belief of a group of people in the Philippines and they felt mocked and disrespected. It is also their right to defend their belief against a person or group who they think is tarnishing the things they value. If Pura Luka Vega is saying that he has the right to express himself through drag, then, these people who are attacking him also have the right to express what they believe.
Perhaps, a simple sorry will do to end this issue.
