Police Authorities Arrest 2 Men in Las Piñas for Alleged Violation of Gun Ban
Two men have been arrested in Las Piñas for alleged violation of a gun ban enforced by the Commission on Elections.
On Tuesday (August 29, 2023), the police authorities arrested two individuals riding a motorcycle, accused of violating the gun ban enforced by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.
According to a report by the Southern Police District (SPD), personnel from the Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit conducted an Oplan Sita operation and pulled over the two men, who were riding without helmets.
Instead of complying, the motorcycle sped away, prompting the police to give chase. Eventually, the police officers were able to stop the motorcycle and found in possession of the suspects, a .38 caliber revolver, a switchblade, a bolt cutter, and a surgical scissor.
The two violators were arrested after failing to provide any proof of authority for carrying the firearm. The suspects now face charges for violating RA 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, as well as BP6 under the Omnibus Election Code.
“We humbly request the public to fully cooperate with the election gun ban and refrain from carrying firearms and deadly weapons as the SPD will remain committed to ensuring the rule of law to ensure a safe environment that encourages a fair and violence-free election,” SPD district director PBGen. Roderick Mariano said.
The authorities are taking serious measures to maintain a secure and peaceful electoral process as the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections approach. The recent arrest serves as a reminder that strict compliance with the election gun ban is important for a successful and fair election process.
