PNP Reveals Over 8,000 Guns of Elected Police Officials Have Expired Licenses
The Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed that over 8,000 guns of elected officials have allegedly expired licenses.
More than 8,000 weapons belonging to elected officials have expired licenses, according to the Philippine National Police-Civil Security Group (PNP-CSG). According to CSG Director Police Brig. Gen. Benjamin Silo Jr., 8,313 of the 30,068 registered guns in the names of elected politicians have expired.
Silo also stated that, in their “safe estimate,” about half of the individuals with expired licenses are officials at the barangay level, and that they will give a copy of their list to the Commission on Elections.
“What we did in CSG, we provide extra special effort to encourage these people, elected officials to renew their expired licenses,” Silo said in the interview.
It emphasized that government leaders set a good example, particularly when it came to gun ownership. Based on the report, he emphasized that they are encouraging officials to ensure that the next BSKE (Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections) are calm, quiet, and orderly.
“It’s more on encouraging them to comply with the provision of RA 10591…I hope we can be a model, so that we can make sure that the upcoming BSKE (Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections) will be peaceful, quiet and orderly,” Silo insisted.
Meanwhile, the CSG revealed that 19,000 of the 539,000 weapons possessed by the police and military have ‘unrenewed permits.’ According to Silo, the PNP has contacted the various leaders of the relevant organizations and has also provided a list of delinquent gun holders.
Between January 1 and May 26, the PNP confiscated 11,417 loose firearms from 3,599 persons detained for illegally possessing such weapons. According to PNP-CSG data, police and military personnel own 19,000 unrenewed licenses out of a total of 539,000 guns.
The PNP-CSG has already contacted several units to remind the aforementioned police and military personnel to renew their firearm licenses. Meanwhile, it has been two weeks since the PNP-CSG one-stop shop in Camp Crame in Quezon City opened, and only 240 gun owners have renewed their permits here.
