Grade 7 Student Earns Praises Online After He Stopped School Bus After Driver Passed Out
A grade 7 student has been hailed as a hero after he brings a school bus to a stop after the driver passed out.
According to a statement made by a school official, a middle school student in Michigan is being hailed as a hero for his quick thinking and bravery that prevented a school bus from crashing after the driver passed out.
Dillon Reeves, a seventh-grader at Lois E. Carter Middle School in Warren, sprang into action after the bus driver experienced dizziness while driving and informed the transportation department that she wasn’t feeling well and was going to pull over for relief.
However, the driver ultimately lost consciousness and was unable to stop the bus, which began to veer into oncoming traffic.
Reeves, who was seated a few rows back, immediately got up from his seat and ran to the front of the bus. Despite being in a panic, he took control of the steering wheel and stopped the bus in the middle of the road.
In a video of the incident, Reeves can be seen slowly applying the brakes and yelling to the other passengers to call 911.
“He had the wherewithal to push it slowly, likely in anticipation that the bus was full of passengers. So despite the justifiable panic on the bus, you could imagine this is probably a 66-passenger bus and it was full at the time,” Livernois said.
Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes, and the bus driver was taken to the hospital for examination. The students were then loaded onto a different bus to continue their journey home. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries to any of the children on the bus.
The bus driver is now in stable condition, though she did experience a medical emergency owing to a loss of consciousness.
Dillon Reeves’ heroic actions have been praised by the school officials and emergency services, and he has been commended for his bravery and quick thinking in a moment of crisis.
