Minors Vandalized SPED Center in Zamboanga del Sur
A Special Education – SPED Center in Barangay San Carlos, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur was allegedly vandalized and ransacked by a group of minors.
The incident left classrooms in disarray, with learning materials and school property disturbed after the suspects reportedly entered the campus and searched through different rooms.
The school officials shared photos showing the extent of the damage, emphasizing the disruption caused to a facility dedicated to supporting children with special educational needs.
According to reports, the individuals involved were believed to be out-of-school youth who entered the school grounds in search of money and other valuable items. School administrators said the incident was particularly painful because the center serves students who already face unique challenges in their education.
Authorities were able to identify and arrest the suspects. However, because they were minors, they were later released in accordance with existing laws concerning children in conflict with the law.
School officials and community members who have long been concerned about youth involvement in theft and other unlawful activities in the area were frustrated after learning that there were minors involved.
Mayet Tubac, head of the Tukuran SPED Center, said the school has repeatedly faced problems involving young offenders. Despite efforts to strengthen security and coordinate with authorities, preventing similar incidents remains a challenge.
Rather than seeking harsh punishment, the school is calling for accountability, proper intervention programs, and stronger parental guidance. Administrators believe that young age should not be used as an excuse for actions that harm schools, teachers, students, and the wider community.
“We are not asking for harsh punishment. We are asking for accountability, proper intervention, and parental guidance. Being young should never be an excuse to destroy, steal, or disrespect the efforts of teachers, parents, and the community,” Tukuran SPED Center said.
