2 Nursing Students Received Full Scholarships After Helping Jeepney Driver

Two nursing students from Bulacan have been awarded full scholarships after helping save a jeepney driver who suffered a heat-related illness.

The students, Precious Pescador and Joana Mae Barquilla of Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Inc. (DYCI), were recognized by their school for their quick response and dedication in helping a driver believed to have suffered from a heat-related illness.

The incident happened shortly after 8:00 a.m. near the Bocaue Toll Plaza along the North Luzon Expressway. Precious, a 20-year-old freshman nursing student, was on her way to school to take an examination when she noticed that the jeepney driver, identified as 49-year-old Luis Herno Gavilo, appeared uncomfortable and confused while driving.

As the trip continued, she observed signs that something was wrong. The driver seemed restless, had difficulty focusing, and was struggling to stay alert. At one point, the jeepney reportedly drifted into another lane and nearly collided with another vehicle.

Fortunately, the driver was able to regain control and safely pull over to the side of the road. Precious immediately stepped in and provided first aid. She sought help from nearby people and requested an ambulance.

Fellow DYCI nursing student Joana Mae Barquilla arrived and assisted in caring for the driver.

The two students worked together to keep the driver conscious and comfortable while waiting for medical responders. They cooled his body, monitored his condition, and stayed by his side for nearly 20 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

They even accompanied him to the hospital, setting aside their own preparations for their upcoming final examinations.

In recognition of their compassion and professionalism, DYCI granted both students full scholarships that will cover their studies until graduation. The school also provided cash rewards and plans to honor them during its recognition ceremonies, celebrating their inspiring act of service and care for the community.
