Here’s what Joy Barcoma said about this matter.
Beauty queen Joy Barcoma criticized “queerbaiting” content creators, who remain silent about problems impacting the community.
Miss Philippines Earth 2025 Joy Barcoma spoke about her truth about queerbaiting, or when creators hint at LGBTQ+ relationships or representation to attract audiences; however, they never actually confirm or meaningfully show it.
On Wednesday, March 25, the beauty queen aired her reaction to the topic, stressing that representing queer identities should also involve being responsible. She urged the public and content creators to show authentic support for the LGBTQ+ community.
“Wala namang problema magbakla-baklaan dahil wala namang nakakahiya sa pagiging bakla. If anything being gay is being interesting kaya nga yun ang ginagawa niyong persona,” she wrote.
For her, the main concern lies when such portrayals are done without supporting the community. She emphasized that true support goes beyond content and should be reflected in actions, especially when it comes to promoting inclusivity and respect.
Barcoma stressed that standing with the LGBTQ+ community should be consistent and true.
“Kung kaya niyong gayahin ang mga bakla, dapat kaya niyo rin tahakin ang masukal na daan at maranasan ang masalimuot na mundo para lang sa kanilang pagtanggap,” she said.
The beauty queen also urged audiences to be more mindful of the content they engage with and to support creators who truly promote equality. She stressed that visibility and representation should empower the community, not be used merely as a marketing tactic.
She called on creators to move beyond performative acts and demonstrate genuine support.
