PNP Cracks Down on Price Hikes Amid Rising Costs Crisis

PNP Sends Strong Message to Retailers Over Sudden Price Increases

PNP – The PNP is ramping up efforts to monitor rising prices and protect consumers from unfair practices.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its monitoring of the prices of basic goods across the country, amid growing concerns over rising costs. This move comes as prices of various commodities, particularly fuel, continue to climb due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement released on Thursday, March 19, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said the police force is already coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and local government units to address the situation. The goal is to ensure that businesses adhere to fair pricing practices and that consumers are protected from potential exploitation during this period of economic strain.

“We are coordinating with the DTI and the local government units on how the PNP could effectively assist on this aspect as part of our mandate to protect the interest of the people,” said Nartatez.

The PNP chief also issued a strong reminder to retailers, urging them not to take advantage of the current crisis for personal gain. He emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated, especially at a time when many Filipinos are already struggling with increased living expenses.

“Let us not take advantage of the current economic challenge to push for personal gains. This is inhumane, this is not what Filipinos do, and we will not allow this,” said the PNP chief.

“Mahigpit ang ating panawagan sa mga retailers na huwag abusuhin ang sitwasyon at huwag basta-basta magtaas ng presyo. Hahabulin namin kayo kung hindi kayo susunod sa ating batas,” said Nartatez.

Meanwhile, the DTI assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation to maintain fair pricing and a sufficient supply of essential goods. The agency acknowledged the financial burden faced by consumers while also recognizing the challenges encountered by manufacturers.

“We recognize the financial strain faced by consumers while also acknowledging the cost pressures confronting manufacturers. Our priority remains to ensure fair and reasonable pricing,” DTI Secretary Cristina Roque said in a recent statement.

He said, “The DTI remains committed to working closely with industry to ensure steady supply and stable prices of basic goods, protecting Filipino consumers at all times.”
