VP Sara Duterte revealed that she had already recruited her running mate for the upcoming 2028 elections last year.
Vice President Sara Duterte made an early declaration of her 2028 presidential bid. The national election is still a couple of years away, and some believe that this strategy could give her rival an advantage and subject her to intense scrutiny over allegations of threatening officials and misusing confidential funds.
The vice president has been the frontrunner in pre-election surveys, and the official filing of candidacies will start in October 2027. Her early declaration of candidacy was the opposite of what her father did when he successfully ran for president in 2016.
Senator Imee Marcos is open to becoming her running mate in the upcoming national elections, with the proposed all-female tandem gaining the backing of Senator Robin Padilla.
However, Padilla said he is also willing to run as her vice president, provided the directive comes directly from former president Rodrigo Duterte. Amid the buzz as to who her running mate will be, she revealed that she had already recruited one last year.
“May ni-recruit ako, hanggang diyan lang sasabihin ko,” Duterte said in an interview with SMNI’s ‘Vox Populi’ program. She did not disclose further details to protect this person and to give him or her the time to think things through with his or her career.
“Pero ito lang ang sasabihin ko: Hindi pwede na walang managot. Yung nire-recruit ko na vice president siya ang magpapanagot sa mga gumawa ng mali sa bayan para ako, nakatutok ako sa trabaho ng presidente,” she added.
Duterte expressed that the vice president she is recruiting will be the one to pursue those who have committed wrongdoing against the nation, allowing her to focus on the president’s duties.
