Starbucks Branch Criticized Over Incident Involving ChildĀ w/Ā AutismĀ
A branch of Starbucks at SM Pampanga is facing criticism after it allegedly asked a customer and her child with autism spectrum to leave the store.
Former Bayan Muna party-list Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate brought the issue to public attention. He expressed disappointment over the reported incident, saying the store showed a lack of sensitivity toward persons with disabilities.
According to the report, the child was eating food that had been bought from another store. While many establishments have policies about outside food, Zarate pointed out that some children on the autism spectrum may have special dietary needs.

Zarate explained that certain food items could be part of a medical or therapeutic routine, especially for children with sensory challenges.
The official said that while businesses have the right to set their own rules, these should be applied with understanding and compassion, especially in cases involving persons with disabilities.
He called on the Philippine franchise of Starbucks to apologize to the mother and child involved. He also suggested that the company conduct sensitivity training for its staff, with focus on the Magna Carta for Persons with Disability or Republic Act 9442.

He further urged the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Council on Disability Affairs to look into the matter.
As ofĀ this writing, there has been no public statement from the branchĀ regardingĀ the incident. TheĀ incidentĀ has sparked online discussions about inclusivity, corporate policies, and the importance of understanding the needs of families raising children with special conditions.Ā
