Kiko Barzaga Refuses to Back Fresh Impeachment Bid vs VP Sara Duterte
KIKO BARZAGA – As impeachment talks heat up in Congress, Cavite Representative Kiko Barzaga has made his position clear on the controversial move against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga has clarified that he will not sign any new impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, even as he agrees that her use of confidential funds should be thoroughly examined.
In a statement shared online on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Barzaga explained his position, stressing that accountability in government must not be driven by political maneuvering. While he acknowledged the need to scrutinize how the Office of the Vice President (OVP) spent its confidential funds, he raised concern over what he described as a more serious issue involving the possible misuse of public money by the current administration.

“I will not be signing the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte, while I agree that her usage of confidential funds must be investigated, President Marcos spending billions of public funds in order to bribe Congress into voting for VP Duterte’s impeachment is ultimately a far greater crime than anything VP Duterte is accused of,” Barzaga said in his statement.
According to the lawmaker, processes meant to ensure accountability should not devolve into alleged political tactics. He emphasized that investigations into the use of government funds should be carried out through existing legal and institutional mechanisms, rather than through impeachment proceedings that could further deepen political divisions in the country.
Barzaga’s remarks came amid ongoing discussions in the House of Representatives regarding calls to file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte over issues linked to confidential and intelligence funds. Several lawmakers and civic groups have been pushing for a more comprehensive probe, arguing that public funds must be transparent and properly accounted for. Others, however, believe that congressional committee hearings and current review mechanisms are sufficient to address the matter.

The congressman warned that impeachment, if pursued without a broad consensus and clear legal basis, could distract from more pressing national concerns and undermine public trust in democratic institutions. For him, the focus should remain on ensuring transparency and good governance without resorting to actions that may be perceived as politically motivated.
Meanwhile, the camp of Vice President Duterte has remained largely silent on the prospect of impeachment. In previous statements, however, the Vice President has maintained that she is willing to face any investigation related to the use of her office’s funds.
As debates continue in Congress, the public and various sectors are closely watching how the House will move forward on the issue, which has become one of the most contentious political topics in the country today.
